<image:title>Home - Anti-Black Racism By: Anthony Gebrehiwot</image:title>
<image:caption>I do need to express that what has transpired during the week of May 24th has made it as clear as day that we have reached our limit. The trauma, the response to the trauma, the information, the misinformation, the allyship and lack thereof. All of it means that we can’t continue to exist in a world where our bodies and minds are disenfranchised and being treated like inanimate objects. When people try to give me career advice, one of the first things that always comes up is you need to diversify your portfolio and shoot people that don’t look like you. This is great advice and I probably should do that at some point in time. However, I’m not ready to go down that road because I feel and have felt a personal calling to uplift my people through my work. When I see someone that looks just like me getting lynched while on a run in 2020, I HAVE TO MAKE WORK THAT HOLDS OUR PEOPLE IN THE HIGHEST LIGHT POSSIBLE INCASE ANY OF US FORGET WHO WE REALLY ARE ON THIS PLANET. I’m frustrated, I’m tired, I’m sad, I’m mourning with you all. But the work doesn’t end here. If anything it has intensified, it has become more urgent than ever. To my community and to my global family, I love you all. Keep pushing for us all. Rest In power Ahmaud Arbery, Rest in Power George Floyd, Rest In Power Regis Korchinski- Paquet and every other black body that has been taken away too soon.</image:caption>

<image:title>Breaking Barriers - Michelle Hazell</image:title>
<image:caption>Resilience runs in my blood for as long as I can remember, diversity has been my biggest teacher. Always breaking and shattering barriers. Whether it’s mentally, physically, emotionally or spiritually. Its molded and shaped so many of us over and over again and I’ve always embraced every part of it, although nobody ever said it would be easy. When we are presented with challenges it’s in those moments that truly defines who we are. In the darkness is where we find our light. When you look at my work, I want you to be there, be in it. As its just you and the colours surrounding you. I want you to hear the music. I want you to smell the colours. I want you to feel the depth. All of the expressions imaginable.</image:caption>

OFTEN SEEN THROUGH OUR OWN FIXED GAZE WE ARE REMINDED THAT TRANSFORMATION COMES WITH DISCOMFORT, LIKE THE SALMON SWIMMING AGAINST THE TIDE. THIS ILLUSTRATION ATTEMPTS TO CAPTURE MOMENTS OF TRANSFORMATION THAT CANNOT BE TRULY PUT INTO WORDS OR VISUALS BUT MUST BE FELT BY THOSE EXPERIENCING IT.</image:caption>

<image:title>Transcendence and Transformation</image:title>
<image:caption>DESIREE MCKENZIE THIS IMAGE CAPTURES TRANSCENDENCE AND TRANSFORMATION IN THE CONTEXT OF NEW LIFE AND GROWTH. MANY TIMES, CHANGE CAN BRING TURMOIL, HEARTACHE, BUT ULTIMATELY BRING US TO A NEWFOUND DESTINATION THAT WE FIND BEAUTY IN LATER. I CHOSE THE VERY LITERAL SYMBOLISM OF FLOWERS TO SHOW THIS. I WANTED TO CAPTURE THEM AS IF THEY HAD JUST BLOOMED FROM THE SUBJECT’S BODY AND SHE IS COVERED IN THEM. THE INTENT OF THIS WAS TO SHOW BOTH THE BEAUTY OF THIS GROWTH, BUT ALSO THE DISCOMFORT AS VINES ARE WRAPPED AROUND HER NECK, HAIR, AND GROWING FROM HER HANDS. THIS PAST YEAR HAS CAUSED A LOT OF US TO TRANSFORM WHILE STAYING STAGNANT, STUNTING OUR EXPERIENCES AS WE REMAINED IN SOCIAL ISOLATION. FLOWERS ARE SIMILAR TO THIS; THEY CARRY OUT THEIR ROOTS, GROWTH, REST, AND WILTING IN ONE PLACE. SO MANY OF US TAKE COMFORT BEING IN CONSTANT MOTION. WITH THIS IN MIND - THOUGH THIS YEAR HAS BEEN UNCOMFORTABLE, IT HAS FORCED US ALL TO STOP MOVING AND ADJUST TO GROWTH WHILE PAUSED. I’VE ALWAYS HAD A FASCINATION WITH HOW THE MOST IMPACTFUL GROWTH HAPPENS WHEN WE’RE NOT LOOKING, BUT IN RECENT TIMES, WE’VE BEEN ABLE TO SEE EVERY BIT OF CHANGE IN OURSELVES. IT IS MY HOPE THAT EACH OF US HAVE FOUND SOME WAYS TO GROUND OURSELVES TO RECOGNIZE THE BEAUTY, AND TRANSFORMATION THAT CAN BE BIRTHED FROM STILLNESS. When’s the last time you caught up with yourself? Try to catch a flower while it blooms. Chased the moon to the edge of the car window while it follows you. Try to find what change looks like, We know too well what it feels like Let’s catch petals curl into themselves, they too hide from the nighttime. There have been nights I try to catch the very moment when the sun decides to be birthed from moons. Like if we’re still enough we’ll feel the world shift on its axis. There’s an army of us transcending sunsets. Laughter bursting like when we bloom, Hope bringing me back to the ocean, Trying to see the tide decide to recede on a beach. I’ve spent enough time trying to find the blinks of revolution we never see, I realize we have so much in common, I am ocean, I am flower, I am all the transformation we wish we could see. If we share change, we also share beauty. Poem by: Desiree Mckenzie.</image:caption>

<image:caption>RAHIM PEREZ-ANDERSON WHEN I GIVE THOUGHT TO THE WORDS, TRANSCENDENCE AND TRANSFORMATION THE TWO GO HAND IN HAND. TRANSCENDENCE CAN BE SEEN AS THIS COLLECTIVE, OUT OF BODY EXPERIENCE THAT IS EXPERIENCED WHEN THE SOUL CAN BE FELT THROUGH AN INTERNAL PRESSURE. TRANSFORMATION IS WHAT WE HAVE ALL GONE THROUGH WITH THESE UNCERTAIN AND UNUSUAL PERIODS OF ISOLATION AND REFLECTION. SO WHEN APPROACHED AT THE SAME TIME, I BELIEVE THAT ONE MUST GO THROUGH A TRANSFORMATION OF SOME KIND TO THEN BE TRANSCENDENT IN MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT. THIS CAN SCARE PEOPLE, BUT WHEN I THINK OF HOW THESE WORDS CAN BE REPRESENTED IN ART, I TRY TO BREAK IT DOWN TO SIMPLER TERMS I CAN UNDERSTAND AND APPLY. LIKE HARD WORK, PATIENCE, MANIFESTATION, REFLECTION AND CHANGE. TO TRANSCEND AND TRANSFORM, WE MUST GO BEYOND OUR FEARS, LIMITATIONS AND CONFINING PERCEPTIONS THAT BLOCK THE NEXT STEP IN OUR LIVES THAT WILL LEAD US INTO THE BROADER WORLD.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Chawntay Barrett In response to Nathalia's beautifully shot portrait I created an illustration that is a mirror image of her photograph meant to reflect the spiritual/astral reality of the human experience. Whereas photography aims to capture moments of time and reality, illustrations can express the unseen and the imagined. Nathatlia's imagery pays tribute to the work that we must do to become the best versions of ourselves. That being said, while growth and regrowth is not something that we can always measure or see right away, it's still happening - that is what my piece expresses, the unseen.</image:caption>

<image:caption>JEGA DELISCA “Somewhere over there” is a Digital illustration that explores my transformation that took place last summer. Before the pandemic I had major anxieties about my future, and I let that fear determine most of the moves I was making. Then the worse happened, the pandemic hit, I lost my job, my access to my community and a few loved ones. After months of being inside, buried in grief and self doubt. I went out to my local trail and experienced this profound sense of peace while walking amongst the overgrowth and foliage and in that moment I also realized the worse has already happened, and I survived it. It’s that thought that gave me the ability to regain control from fear and actively participate in my life again. That’s what I Intended to illustrate in this piece, this vibrant sense of self taking the less traveled path.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nathalia Allen These photographs are a visual representation of the self-healing modalities that anchor me to clarity and connection to my body. I believe that sitting in silence and focusing on breathing is the most accessible self healing method humans have. Transformation begins with self awareness. “... to get to the root of the matter, to go even deeper, especially into the subconscious where many of our old patterns lie in wait, we need to find a practice that can help us to unload this conditioning. We do not need to reinvent the wheel. There are already many proven practices that have helped thousands of people take real steps forward in their lives.” - Clarity and Connection, Y. Pueblo. I felt a connection to the root intention from the yoga practices of India. My lived experience with yoga, is exactly what they described as methods that truly help people clear emotional and physical blockages. The goal is to bring peace and contentment to your mind and better connect it to your body. In this modality you can learn 8 different tools such as breathing techniques, ability to look inward and meditation to name a few. The ultimate goal of yoga is fulfillment. For this theme of Transcendence and Transformation I chose to focus on a demonstration of breathing while sitting in silence and self reflection through journaling. Yellow fills the background as it represents the colours associated with the sacred passage of Hinduism, known as Sanskrit, “Manipura,” “to act,” related to the core center of the body, the digestive system and the Solar Plexus chakra. And orange which represents the associated hue of the Sacral chakra or “ Svadhisthana” which means “to feel”. I was inspired by my own personal experience of choosing helpful healing methods that progressively transformed body, mind and spirit. With daily practice this has transformed and transcended many areas in my life like understanding my own intuition and intentional behavioural actions. Helping me become a human that I feel connected with and operate as a higher self in. I am often sharing the tools that I have found helpful on my social media channels, hoping someone who may be feeling some of the ways I was feeling will discover these resources and try it for themselves. My intention for this theme was to share a way to start a practice of transformation. “Great transformations need a beginning.” - Y. Pueblo. This is my first self produced and directed art piece. It was important for me to photograph a black identifying being to represent a sliver of marginalised groups who are in need of support including physical, mental and emotional health care. The still life paintings, inspired by local hair advertisements aimed at individuals of African descent, scrutinize the marketing strategies and persuasive language utilized by these corporations. Ehiko intends to further develop this series by exploring the ingredients utilized and proposing alternative options.</image:caption>

<image:caption>INDICAPTURES Mani the Time Traveller I photographed my friend standing completely still holding a small bouquet of brightly coloured balloons. It was a lovely day. The only motion we see comes from the head - a depiction of how I, the artist, feel moving through life. While there may be a million things going on within at an extremely fast pace, the outside world is still capable of being a still, beautiful place as long as we intentionally stop to admire it. These pieces are a reminder that there is beauty in motion and in stillness - one cannot exist without the other. Created using natural sunlight, photoshop, and a daydream. -INDICAPTURES</image:caption>

<image:caption>SHANICE EDWARDS Love. Intimacy is constantly misconstrued to be solely about physical touch. It’s emotions, sometime without the presence of physical touch. It’s a shared moment in an elevator, a simple coffee date, a walk across the street. It’s deep, long lasting... memorable. With the theme being focused on movement, I focused on the couple and how being in love estops time for them... even though everything they are surrounded by is moving. My intention with these images was to amplify intimacy, and the simplicity thereof.</image:caption>

<image:caption>BIG GLO The pieces shared are reflections of RESILIENCE, STRENGTH, and COURAGE. Often times, we are met with obstacles and adverisities that make life more difficult. However, when we are able to remain confident in ourselves and in our capabilities, these challenges do not overcome us. This work is a reminder to myself and everyone else who interacts with it of the POWER we hold internally.</image:caption>

<image:caption>JASMINE SWIMMER Giving voice to societal norms that continue to affect people of color often is overlooked. The inspiration behind my pieces stem from the hidden pandemic among Black Indigenous bodies. Bringing attention to the mortality rate of Black Mothers, Fatherless Black Boys and the power of unifying the Black Family structure. Each piece was created to stir conversation, contemplation and grief to those that have navigated through these very real realities of trauma. Amplifying my voice through my art gives me the responsibility to highlight the difficult issues that need awareness and understanding. Safe Space speaks to mental health among fatherless Black Boys who grow up into Black Men still dealing with their inner child. Mortality speaks to the broken system of birthwork and postpartum support for Black Women in some occasions causing unnecessary death to the child and or mother. Lethal Combination speaks to the systemic divide of the Black Family, if we can get back to that place of strong relationships we would build unstoppable communities.</image:caption>

<image:caption>SERENE CHAN Intergenerational - This painting is about intergenerational trauma of an immigrant. Parents always go on about sacrifice so we don’t have to. My parents uprooted their life to follow their dreams of coming to Canada. They expect me to continue following their dreams, but I have my own. Self sacrifice is their form of ultimate love, but this is where generational trauma comes from. If this chain continues, we’ll never learn how to take care of ourselves. Parents do so much to fill everyone else’s cups, but who’s filling theirs? I’m still trying to teach them to unlearn this mindset that they’ve adopted from their own parents.</image:caption>

<image:caption>KANISHA DOBERO Kanisha’s Artist statement: This artwork aims to highlight the urgent need for action on climate change and the devastating effects it has on our planet. By using a vibrant color palette in the iris and contrasting images within them, I hope to convey the beauty and fragility of our environment. Through the eyes, we can see the dichotomous realities happening in the world currently. The left eye shows a forest on fire to represent the destruction of our planet and natural landscapes. The opposing eye displays a serene forest and a community with their hand outstretched to represent the action of giving back to the environment. I used an individual pair of eyes void of skin colour to show that the two outcomes are a direct result of our actions and choices. Through this piece, I hope to inspire viewers to take action and make meaningful changes in their daily lives to help preserve our planet for future generations. ___________________________________________________ The collab piece is titled, "Together We Flourish" and the eyes are titled, " The Path We Choose pt1" & "The Path We Choose pt2"</image:caption>

<image:caption>JASMINE VANSTONE Through my digital collage series Nurturing Voices, I want to promote a more grounded sense of wellness through self-affirmation and connecting with nature. We live in a world where stress and anxiety are common, and our self-doubt and insecurities can quickly amplify those negative emotions. I believe that the first step in achieving wellness is to acknowledge that we are important and worthy individuals, whose voices should be heard and amplified. Through my series, I hope to encourage viewers to reflect on their self-worth and the power of their voices. The ripple effect that comes out of promoting positivity, self-expression, and self-love can transform the way we nurture others and form relationships with nature. By centering ourselves and amplifying our voices, we can build a supportive and inclusive community that promotes wellness and encourages us to embrace our unique identities.</image:caption>

<image:caption>JEZEBELLE MOSONG Amplifying Our Voices We all have voices in our heads. We can embrace all these voices, but choose the best ones to amplify. We can follow a path that is best for us to enforce positive patterns of thought. These photos are representative of the multiple voices constantly buzzing around our minds. This piece is dedicated to Abynaya Kousikan, who always amplified our voices.</image:caption>
